Nancy Cato ~ 'I AM'

I first came across Nancy Cato's work at a show curated by Pamela Mays-McDonald in Oakland called 'In Search of Sheba'. There were a lot of talented artists being represented but one which really stood out was Nancy Cato. She has a unique voice and amazing talent which is under-represented in the industry I work in - a voice which I truly want to see and hear more from. Her characters are vivacious and engaging - their stories are heartfelt and authentic and Cato draws like a veteran!

Cato was born and raised in New Haven, CT. Growing up, she was fascinated with doodling and tracing the Beetle Bailey comic strips. Her early inspirations include Uncle Donny's book of illustrations and the graffiti explosion of the '80s. Cato majored in graphic design and illustration at Western Connecticut State University. She recently had her first solo exhibition, 'Tom Boy' at the Sargent Johnson Gallery in the African American Art & Culture Complex, San Francisco.

I am so grateful to Nancy for the beautiful pen&ink original 'I AM' she is donating to The Mother Hen Project. Please come along on Nov 8 to place your bids on this piece.
